PETITION ON THE NEED FOR STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION IN THE FIXING OF REGULATORY FEES AFFECTING TRADITIONAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONERS IN GHANA

The Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners Associations (GHAFTRAM), the umbrella body representing Traditional Medicine Practitioners and their Associations across Ghana, respectfully writes to draw the attention of the Government and all relevant authorities to the persistent challenges faced by practitioners in the Traditional Medicine sector regarding the unilateral fixing and implementation of regulatory fees.

Traditional Medicine continues to play a significant role in Ghana's healthcare delivery system, providing services to millions of Ghanaians, creating healthcare opportunities, and contributing to the national economy. Despite these contributions, practitioners continue to face numerous financial and regulatory challenges, as well as inadequate engagement with the industry's recognised leadership.

It has become a matter of  concern that several Government institutions periodically review fees affecting Traditional Medicine Practitioners without periodic consultation with the leadership of traditional medicine practitioners

The cumulative effect places an enormous financial burden on practitioners, many of whom operate small- and medium-scale facilities. In many cases, overlapping fees are imposed by different institutions for related regulatory activities, creating unnecessary hardship and discouraging compliance.

GHAFTRAM believes that decisions affecting the livelihoods of Traditional Medicine Practitioners should be made through broad stakeholder consultation, transparency, and collaboration. The absence of such consultation undermines confidence in the regulatory process and denies practitioners the opportunity to contribute practical insights that could lead to fair and sustainable fee structures.

We therefore respectfully petition the Government to:

Institute a policy requiring mandatory stakeholder consultation before the introduction or revision of any regulatory fees affecting Traditional Medicine Practitioners.

Establish a structured dialogue between Government regulatory institutions and the recognised leadership of the Traditional Medicine sector.

Review existing regulatory fees to ensure they are fair, reasonable, and proportionate to practitioners' capacity.

Harmonise regulatory charges imposed by various institutions to eliminate duplication and reduce unnecessary financial burdens.

Ensure that future policy and regulatory decisions affecting the Traditional Medicine sector are developed through inclusive and participatory processes.

We firmly believe that meaningful consultation between Government and industry stakeholders will promote compliance, strengthen regulation, encourage investment in Traditional Medicine, and support Ghana's national agenda to integrate Traditional Medicine into Ghana's healthcare system.

GHAFTRAM remains committed to working collaboratively with the Government and all regulatory institutions to promote safe, effective, quality, and affordable Traditional Medicine services for the benefit of the people of Ghana.

We respectfully appeal to the appropriate authorities to give this petition urgent consideration in the interest of fairness, good governance, and the sustainable development of the Traditional Medicine sector.
