Accra, Ghana — Renowned Traditional Medicine Practitioner, researcher and advocate Okogyeabibiduro Nana Kwadwo Obiri has released a significant publication titled “The Wisdom of African Traditional Medicine for Professionals”, a book aimed at restoring dignity, promoting scientific understanding, and advancing the professional practice of indigenous African healing systems.

The book highlights that African Traditional Medicine is not merely folklore, but a respected knowledge system built on history, observation, experience, spirituality, ethical responsibility and generations of practice. It challenges misconceptions that traditional healing is primitive or unscientific and calls for proper documentation, regulation, research and collaboration with modern healthcare systems.

According to the author, traditional medicine should not compete with modern medicine but rather work together through integration, mutual respect, and shared responsibility to improve healthcare delivery. The book explains that traditional medicine contributes greatly in areas such as preventive care, holistic healing, community-based healthcare and cultural understanding.

A major focus of the publication is the need for ethics, professionalism and accountability among traditional medicine practitioners. Nana Kwadwo Obiri emphasises that the healer is a custodian of life who must demonstrate honesty, discipline, confidentiality and commitment to patient welfare.

The book further addresses spirituality in African healing, explaining that traditional medicine recognises the connection between the body, mind, community, and environment, while condemning fear-based practices, deception, and the Misuse of traditional knowledge.

It also encourages the youth to embrace indigenous knowledge through education, research and innovation to prevent the loss of valuable ancestral wisdom. The publication introduces the concept of “NATURO HERBAL” as a new professional identity that promotes natural medicine, ethical standards, documentation, quality assurance, and respect for African heritage.

Okogyeabibiduro Nana Kwadwo Obiri, who is the Director of Obiri Herbal Research Centre and General Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners Associations (GHAFTRAM), uses the book as a call for unity among practitioners, stronger institutional collaboration, and recognition of traditional medicine as an important contributor to Ghana and Africa’s healthcare future.
